Tyler sat alone in the interview room, rubbing his hands on the backs of his arms against the frigid draft that spewed from the AC vent above him. He’d been sitting there for what felt like an eternity, the only way of telling time the tapping of his shoes on the crappy laminated floor.

Once Jessica calmed the nurse who saw Ayar Kachi down they called the police, and Tyler and Jessica were placed into their custody. Jim and Nancy’s deaths had been unexplainable just like Gabe’s, but their presence at the time of their demise had raised some serious questions. After being separated from Jessica, Tyler had been interrogated numerous times throughout the night, and now his anxiety and exhaustion were through the roof, warring for dominance.

The room’s only door opened and Detective Kilgore entered in a huff. She scowled as she stomped to the table Tyler sat at and slapped a manilla folder on it. Unlike her tidy appearance from the first time they’d met, her blue suit was crinkled and errant red hairs split out from her sloppy ponytail in every direction.

“What exactly do you think you’re doing?” Detective Kilgore demanded. “I can’t help you if you keep implicating yourself like this.”

“I know it doesn’t look good, but I was trying to protect Jim and Nancy.”

“You deliberately involved yourself in a police matter!”

“What was I supposed to do, huh? I couldn’t let them die at the hands of that monster, not that it made a difference anyway.”

Detective Kilgore rolled her eyes. “Please tell me this isn’t about the ‘evil spirit’ you mentioned in your police reports.”

“His name is Ayar Kachi, and like I’ve told you and everyone else he is responsible for everything that’s happened. I know it sounds crazy, but he’s real and he won’t stop killing. The hospital staff saw him, Jessica and I saw him, and so did Gabe and his family before he murdered them. If you don’t do anything anyone could be next. Then what will you do?”

Detective Kilgore glared intensely at him, faltering after a long moment. “Alright fine, I'll level with you. You know as well as I do that this case has numerous deaths attached to it with a perpetrator no one can get their hands on. It won’t be long before some crappy tabloid or news station catches wind and blows it all out of proportion. Just like it did with …”

Her eyes went watery, but before a single tear could be shed she sniffled and straightened her posture. “There is a reason I am handling this case. This isn’t the first time something like this has happened, and unless I figure it out it won’t be the last. Last year my friend Jill and her daughter Andrea went to Peru. Jill is an archaeologist, and she always takes Andrea on whatever explorations she can. They traveled all over Peru and were supposed to return to the states in the next day or two, but they decided to follow some rumors they heard about a hidden ruin of significant importance.
